Best Laptops for Silhouette Cameo

Can you imagine paying for a brand new Silhouette Cameo 4, only to find that your old laptop isn’t up to the job? It may try, but it could still be slow and sluggish and affect your enjoyment of your designing and crafting.

Worse yet, what if you were to buy a brand-new laptop for that very purpose, only to find out that the Silhouette Cameo software, Silhouette Studio, won’t run on that laptop’s operating system.

The solution, of course, is to read this article and find out what kind of laptop you need, and perhaps choose one from our shortlist of favorites. And we totally get that choosing one can be tricky if you don’t know what to look out for, which is why we’ve also put together a handy buying guide for you.

And I’d like to share with you the good news that you don’t have to pay over the odds for a laptop for Silhouette Cameo - you could even make do with a budget laptop. So in our shortlist, we deliberately left out laptops that are needlessly expensive.

So, without further ado…

OUR TOP PICK

Lenovo Flex 5 14' 2-in-1 Laptop, 14.0' FHD (1920 x 1080) Touch Display, AMD Ryzen 5 4500U Processor, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon Graphics, Digital Pen Included, Win 10, 81X20005US, Graphite Grey

Now this is an excellent laptop for creating artwork!

What we love about this laptop is how it features a touchscreen. So if you want to create some original artwork, you can do so by drawing with the included stylus, and then import the design into Silhouette Studio, the design software for use with the Silhouette Cameo.

And you can switch it between different modes - tablet mode for sketching, with the keyboard folded behind the screen, laptop mode for using the keyboard, or tent mode for streaming movies.

It meets all the requirements you need to run Silhouette Studio, with a great CPU, the AMD Ryzen 5, which can process data at speeds of 2.1 GHz, which is slightly higher than required for Silhouette Studio.

And it has 4 times the amount of RAM required, coming in at 16 GB. And a whopping amount of on-board storage, coming in a staggering 256 GB. There’s also a great quality integrated graphics card, the AMD Integrated Graphics.

It features the Windows 10 operating system, which is one of the easiest and more familiar operating systems around. It has enough USB ports to both connect to the Silhouette Cameo and receive images on a USB stick.

It has a very impressive battery life, too, and will last for up to 10 hours on a full charge.

The only real drawback is the screen size. At 14 inches, it’s slightly smaller than that of a more traditional laptop, which is 15.6 inches. This could prove annoying when using the library-design split screen, but should be perfectly fine the rest of the time.

But although the screen is slightly small, it has a very high resolution at 1920 x 1080, which is Full High Definition, and means that you get very crisp and clear images, which is perfect for any kind of design work or photo editing you want to do.

RUNNER UP

HP Stream 14-inch HD Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Celeron N4000, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC, Windows 10 Home in S Mode with Office 365 Personal for 1 Year (14-cb191nr, Royal Blue)

For those of you who are particularly budget conscious, this laptop is definitely the most affordable one you could get away with for using with a Silhouette Cameo, available at under $300 for a non-touch screen version, or under $400 for a touchscreen.

It has some great specs and is more than capable of running your Silhouette Cameo software, Silhouette Studio…

First, there’s the Intel Celeron Dual-Core CPU, which can process data at speeds of up to 2.6 GHz. Then there’s the 4 GB of RAM, which is all you need. And to top that off, there’s also plenty of on-board storage, coming in at 64 GB with room for both the app itself and all the files you might want to store.

One of the star features of this laptop (besides the touchscreen if that’s what you’re going for) is that it comes with 1-year’s free subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 Personal, which means not only do you get to use the latest Microsoft Office apps for free, but you also get a whopping 1000 GB of online storage for your files.

Best Laptops For Silhouette Cameo Buying Guide

As promised, here’s your buying guide. Let’s walk you through what you need to know.

Operating System

One of the most important things to note about running the Silhouette Studio software is that it will only run on certain operating systems, namely Microsoft Windows 7 or higher, or Apple’s macOS x10.0 or higher.

This means that it won’t run on a Chromebook, which features the Chrome operating system.

CPU

The CPU is basically the brain of the laptop and processes all the data. To run Silhouette Studio, you will need a CPU that processes data of speeds of at least 2 GHz.

RAM

The amount of RAM describes the laptop’s ability to do several things at once. And for Silhouette Studio, you will need at least 4 GB of RAM.

On-Board

When you download and install the software, you will need at least 2 GB of space in the on-board storage for it. You may also want to store your files on the hard drive as well, in which case a little more storage space would be good. And it’s better to go for SSD (solid state drive) storage rather than HDD (hard disk drive).

Internet Connection

Although you don’t necessarily need an internet connection to work with the Silhouette Cameo, it does come strongly recommended. Because this allows you to update your Silhouette Studio as updates arise. And, moreover, it also gives you access to the Silhouette Design Store.

Screen Size

Although there’s no minimum requirement for screen size, we would argue that for Silhouette Studio, bigger is generally better.

This is because the user interface often features panels on either side of your designs. And a wider screen is particularly useful if you want to use the library-design split screen.

In other words, a 14-inch screen will be ok, but at times you may prefer a 15-inch screen.

Screen Resolution

Getting crisp and clear images comes down to the screen’s resolution. And luckily most laptops these days feature a High Definition screen resolution, if not Full High Definition or Ultra High Definition.

Graphics Card

If you were to buy a brand-new laptop, the integrated graphics card will be sufficient for using with Silhouette Studio.

USB Port

You will need your laptop to have a USB 2.0 port or higher to connect the laptop to the Silhouette Cameo.

Battery Life

Battery life isn’t too important for Silhouette Cameo, because you can always plug the laptop in when you’re at home. Battery life is only handy if you want to take the laptop out and about.

Other Things to Consider

If you want to edit photos and import the images into the Silhouette Cameo software, then you will also need to ensure that your laptop meets the requirements of your photo editing software.
