Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play World Of Warcraft on a normal laptop?

Depends on what you mean by normal! Provided the laptop meets the minimum specifications for running WoW, you’ll be absolutely fine to play. These are:

  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Intel Core i5-3450 or AMD FX 8300
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760 2 GB or AMD Radeon™ RX 560 2 GB or Intel UHD Graphics 630 (45W TDP) *Requires manufacturer's driver support
  • 4 GB RAM (8GB for integrated graphics such as Intel HD Graphics series)
  • Solid State Drive (SSD) with 100GB available space or Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with 100GB available space

If you’re looking to run things faster and smoother, so you’re not impaired by lag, you need a better quality of laptop with more memory and storage, a higher caliber of graphics card and better running performance all around.

It should meet or exceed the following specifications:

  • Windows® 10 64-bit
  • Intel® Core™ i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700X
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB or AMD Radeon™ RX Vega 64 8 GB or better
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Solid State Drive (SSD) with 100GB available space

Does FPS matter in World of Warcraft?

Sort of, yeah!

Frames per second or FPS determine how many ‘frames’ or different images your laptop screen or computer monitor is able to display at a time. This is known as its refresh rate, which is on an average laptop or computer between 30-50 FPS.

When playing WoW, most players would agree that a frame rate of around 60FPS or as close to that as you can get, is ideal. This will run the game smoothly and without any lagging, so you aren’t impacted by the ability of other players to click faster!

Will more RAM make World of Warcraft run faster?

It depends on how much RAM you already have! To run WoW at all, you require at least 4GB of RAM, though this increases to 8GB if you’re using an integrated graphics card, for example one from the Intel HD Graphics range.

If you want your Warcraft experience to be as smooth and quick as possible, then you should aim for 8GB of RAM. This is information taken from Blizzard themselves - you can’t get more accurate than recommendations from the manufacturer!

Anything above 8GB is not going to make Warcraft run faster unfortunately; if you have that amount and you’re struggling to play or are experiencing lag, it could be a plethora of issues. Try working it out with trial and error… or read the next question!

How Can I Make World Of Warcraft Run Faster?

If you’re sick of lagging in WoW, there are a number of solutions you can try:

  • Upgrade to the latest version of your operating system - outdated OS can lead to connection issues which are notorious for causing lag
  • Check you have the AutoLag tolerance running - this helps you adjust your WoW lag tolerance slider to match the latency of whichever world you’re playing in
  • Reset your user interface, as this makes sure that none of your addons or files are corrupted
  • Is your version of the game using DirectX 12? Try switching to DirectX 11. Running DirectX 11? Switch to DirectX 11 Legacy. To do this go to the WoW Menu, then System, then Advanced, then Graphics API - if this doesn’t help then switch back!
  • See if your power management settings are set to High Performance (provided your CPU and GPU that are powerful enough to cope with this!)
  • Ensure your Wifi connection is as strong as possible - WoW eats bandwidth like no tomorrow, especially during raids - at least 4MB connection is necessary to avoid any problems
  • Have a look at your render scale in the game settings - adjust the quality of each characteristic to ensure you’re not running things at a higher capacity than your rig is able to manage
  • Shut down any software running in the background: this doesn’t just mean any open browsers, applications or software, but also any hidden processes that you don’t need to be using right now, to preserve memory for gaming
  • Upgrade your hardware drivers to ensure the smoothest and most stable connection to the servers
  • Check for any unnecessary in-game add-ons - the Addon Usage program is helpful, particularly if you enable CPU-Tracking and sort by CPU-usage, as this enables you to see which WoW add-ons are causing your CPU usage to spike - you might be able to fix it by reinstalling them, but if not, replacing with a less impactful add-on is best
