The term “budget laptop” is highly subjective. Where one person’s “budget” for a new computer might not extend beyond $500, others consider all laptops under $800 to $1,000 price tags budget. But whatever your price range and the budget threshold is, there is one thing that everyone seeks. And that’s good value for money. Some laptops provide it; others don’t. And it also depends upon a user’s expectations from the machine.

But if you are looking for a decent laptop somewhere less than $1000, there is one laptop you should check out. It’s the Asus VivoBook F510QA. Here’s a summary of what the F510QA offers:

  • Great value for the price.
  • Good display quality.
  • Decent performance (compared to similar products).
  • Beautiful design.
  • Fast charging.

  • Low battery timing.
  • Flimsy keyboard, not backlit.
  • Common performance issue after BIOS update.

Introducing Asus Vivobook F510QA – Affordable, Sleek, and Powerful

Asus VivoBook F510QA

Asus Vivobook 15 (or Asus Vivobook F510QA) is a sleek and simple laptop by Asus, created for everyday usage. Whether you need it for work, studies, or some light gaming, the Vivo Asus F510QA can be a good fit. It offers good value for the price, and the specs it offers rival more expensive machines. It’s powered by an AMD A12-9720P quad-core Processor, an improvement over its predecessor that came with two cores. It comes with either a windows 10 S or Windows 10 pro, depending upon the variant you buy.

We hope this Asus Vivobook F510QA review will help you make up your mind.

Design / Build Quality / Durability

The design is simple, but most people find it aesthetically appealing. Asus laptops (unlike some other products) are usually appealing and have an excellent color selection. The body is made out of plastic, which is to be expected in a budget laptop, but relatively few users are peeved about this particular issue.

Some people find it flimsy, and we would also recommend being gentle with it and don’t just throw in a bag with a bunch of other things, but apart from that, it’s fine. The laptop is durable enough.

This is where your choice of “variant” comes into play. Some older models of the same machine came with a 1 TB hard drive. But the website currently only lists the one with the 256 SSD version, and we would recommend sticking with that for your Asus F510QA. That would have an enormous impact on your speed.

The laptop is powered by an AMD Bristol Ridge A12-9720P Processor (quad-core). The AMD quad-core A12-9720P is a 7th generation processor and is classified as a low to mid range laptop process. Since it has the same number of cores, the AMD quad-core A12-9720P can be compared to an Intel i-5, preferably from the same generation (for example, an i5-7200).

In a side-by-side comparison, the AMD quad-core A12-9720P wins on processing power but lacks in cache memory. This means it’s not as efficient at processing memory-bound tasks (like handling multiple Chrome tabs) as the Intel one.

Still, with a 16GB RAM backing up the AMD A12 processor, the speed is adequate. But it’s not a hardcore gaming laptop, so you can’t expect it to perform that way.

Portability (Size and Weight)

This is one of the stronger features of the Vivobook F510QA. It weighs just 3.7 pounds and has a thin 0.76-inch (19.4 mm) profile. You can be glad that more RAM doesn’t add more weight.

It’s typically compared to a much costlier Ultrabook when it comes to portability.

The plastic body also plays an important role in keeping the weight down for this laptop. The dimensions are 14.2 x 9.5 inches (W x D).

Battery Life

The battery life is adequate at best. The manufacturer doesn’t make any claims about the battery life, and most users found it decent enough, especially if they are really putting the laptop to use (multiple tabs, gaming, rendering, etc.) But it charges fast enough. The only consistent number we got from the reviews was a bit more than a couple of hours.

The battery is the same type as most other budget laptops in the same range: A 3-Cell 42 Watt Hour battery. The company claims to use their super battery technology, which allows their batteries to have a lifespan three times longer than a typical Li-Ion battery. And Asus also claims that their fast-charging technology allows the battery to be charged 60% in 49 minutes.

Keyboard and Keypad

The keyboard is a chink in this laptop’s armor. It isn’t backlit and about as basic as it gets. There is no numeric keypad, either. That’s something that will make you grumble if your office/student work requires putting in a lot of numbers or if you play games.

But if you don’t mind something basic that gets the job done, it’s cool. The keypad is also just that: Basic and gets the job done.

Display Quality & Screen Size

The Asus Vivobook F510QA comes with a 15.6-inch screen, with an impressive screen to body ratio (which means there is more screen on your “screen” than dead plastic). It offers full HD display quality, and it’s powerful up until 1080p. It might not be as crisp as you would like it to be when running 4K, but it’s not bad either. The full HD display makes it great for streaming videos and binging a few Netflix series.

The display is IPS and features Asus’s characteristic full HD 178° wide-view technology, which in simple terms means that you would have better viewing angles and more vivid colors. This is a feather in this laptop’s cap. Most products in this price range don’t offer that kind of quality.

Price was the core selling point of this laptop when it first came out. And while it’s not as cheap as it was before, it’s still very reasonable for the specs it offers. Like other products in the same sphere, it has different variants for different price ranges. You can buy the cheapest version and get stuck with Windows 10 S, or unleash the full power that the Vivobook F510QA gives you, buy paying a few bucks extra.

Whatever the case, price is a strong point in the laptop’s favor.

It comes with more than enough memory. You can buy a cheaper version that comes with eight gigs of RAM. Or you can go for the Asus Vivobook F510QA RAM upgrade and buy the 16 GB version (highly recommended). It won’t just allow you to open more tabs but also gives your laptop a bit of processing and speed edge over similar products that come with lower memory.

Storage Space

You either get a slow 1 TB version or if you opt for Asus Vivobook F510QA memory upgrade, you get 256 GB SSD. While going from 1 TB to 256 GB might not seem like an “upgrade,” the speed and performance difference would be considerable and might be worth a few extra dollars you have to spend on it. The Asus Vivobook SSD version might perform significantly better.

Ports & Connectivity

The machine comes with a generous (and competitive) collection of ports. It has a USB 3.1 (better than a USB 3.0) port, which allows you to connect an optical drive if you are still using an optical drive for some reason, among other things. A Type-C port is an improvement since the older versions didn’t have a type C. It also has two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader, and an HDMI port. Some models also come with an additional USB 3.0 and a fingerprint reader. The USB 2.0 ports might be good enough to hook up a mouse, but not great for transferring data.

The graphics are powered by the AMD Radeon R7 chip, which the company claims can offer a great gaming experience but is actually a very modest gaming chip. It’s an entry-level GPU, and while it’s beneficial for video editing and even streaming, it’s not for playing very demanding games, especially not on full graphics. For these resource-heavy type games, you will have to look for very different products.

What Are Buyers Saying About This Vivobook

Some bad things, but mostly good. Most buyers agree that the laptop offers good value for money. Even though some buyers find the build a bit flimsy, or people who got the 1 TB version instead of the SSD are the ones complaining about its speed. Other than that, users are pretty happy with the machine.

One consistent complaint was about Windows 10 S, especially its restrictions against installing third party software. You can get around it by paying extra for the Windows 10 Pro version. Most people found the quad-core A12 processor to be adequately powerful, and RAM more than enough.

Is Asus VivoBook any good?

Yes. It offers good value for money and is good for most uses. But if you are looking for a gaming machine or running heavy software, you might want to look for a more powerful laptop.

Is the Asus VivoBook upgradeable?

You can buy a different variant of the Vivobook, which offers better specs.

Is Asus VivoBook 15 A good laptop?

Yes. It’s an excellent general-purpose, light-to-medium use laptop.

Which is better, Asus ZenBook or VivoBook?

Asus Zenbook is significantly pricier, and you get more bang for the buck. It has a significantly more powerful processor, a better graphics chip, and more storage (SSD). Since they don’t fall in the same price range, it won’t be a fair comparison.

Adequate Alternatives to The Vivobook (In-case It’s Not What You Were Looking For)

If the Vivobook, with its AMD quad-core A12-9720P processor, isn’t powerful enough or full of features you might be looking for, there are alternative products you can consider. One of them is:

Acer Aspire 5 Slim

Acer Aspire 5 Slim

In the same price range (a bit higher), Acer is offering something different. You get an Intel processor (with the same number of cores), full HD IPS display, less RAM, and better windows. It has significantly better views, and a slightly better graphics chip made it better for gaming.

You can check out the Acer Aspire 5 Slim here on Amazon.

Asus VivoBook F510QA

If you are looking for an affordable, decent laptop that you can put to use in multiple ways: Work, studies, light gaming, content-consumption, etc., then this Vivobook is a good choice.

It’s not one of the best products out there; neither will it be a perfect fit for every different type of user. But it offers amazing specs for the price and delivers on its promise.
